Team Italy: everything you need to know! Athletes, highest scores, start values, European Games, Serie A...

Flowers are blossoming, days are getting longer, birds are singing... We're entering the hot season of the gymnastics year!
After the Serie A final (held on May 9), the Italian athletes are getting ready for Four Nations Trophy (Russia, Romania, Italy, Colombia) which will be held in Turin on May 30 and for Baku European Games (June 14-20). After these competitions, the girls will start training for Glasgow World Championships, the most important meet of the year, in order to qualify to Rio 2016.

Here's an in-depth analysis of what Italian girls have shown so far!

Athletes and European Games

The three athletes who will be representing Italy at European Games first edition are: Giorgia Campana, Tea Ugrin, Alessia Leolini.

The competition format is 3-3-2: three all-arounders per nation, three gymnasts compete on every apparatus, two scores count for the team final score.

National Head Coach Enrico Casella said that he wants to test all the national athletes during the year in order to choose the best team possible for Glasgow World Championships in October.
Therefore Erika Fasana, Martina Rizzelli, Vanessa Ferrari, Carlotta Ferlito are out because they already had the possibility to compete at European Championships.
Vanessa Ferrari is still recovering after mono, so she will be out of competitions for a while.
Arianna Rocca is also out of European Games because she will have her graduation exams in June.
Enus Mariani will not be in Baku because her ankle is not totally healed yet. Only All Arunders can go and she currently has only her bars ready but she'll probably be in Turin.
Lara Mori is injured and needs the plaster for other two weeks, so she has to wait to start training again.
Elisa Meneghini had a pretty nice meet in the Serie A final after struggling a bit due to the back injury she suffered last October. She showed nice difficulty and control on all four events, I guess she wasn't chosen for Baku in order to not hurry her recover but there aren't official news about that.
Lavinia Marongiu has just come back to competition after an injury and was pretty good on vault and beam in the Serie A final, but it's too early to send her to an international competition.

Highest D- scores of the year

The main goal of the Italian National Head Coach Enrico Casella is clear: to make Italy competitive in an international context.
He knows that execution and consistency are not enough, we need decent start values to compete with the Big 4 nations and to top Great Britain, Japan, Canada and Australia: they are the nations to beat to enter the team top 8 at Worlds.
I have seen great improvement in D scores lately, especially at Serie A final.
Here are the highest D scores of the Italian gymnasts!
(I considered the highest D score presented from February to May).
