L to R: Tukhalyan, Spiridonova, Kharenkova Photo by sportgymrus.ru |
Daria Spiridonova is the Russian Cup AA Champion!
Angelina Melnikova should be the winner but she can't officially win because she's still a junior.
First year senior Seda Tukhalyan would have won with 57.733 hadn't she fallen on floor. I hope she finds a way to avoid these falls on floor, because she is a solid all arounder and has competitive beam and floor routines. With her talent and personality she could be a very important member for team Russia.
Maria Kharenkova won the bronze, she had a good competition overall but had some flaws here and there.
Two bad falls on floor prevented Sosnitskaya to rank better. She had a beatiful bars set though, she's improved very much on this event.
I'm sad for Anastasia Dmitrieva. She's a lovely gymnast in my opinion, but nerves often get the best of her. It's a pity, because her floor could be useful for the team.
As for specialists, Viktoria Komova finally hit her bar routine and showed everyone what she's capable of on this event. Unfortunately her beam routine was not very steady, as she had many wobbles even on the easiest elements. Nevertheless, she did a nice and high standing arabian, with just a step on the landing. I hope she gets more consistent on this event because she could be a valid and experienced specialist for the Worlds team.
Maria Paseka had a solid set on bars, even though she didn't catch up the huge score of the team final. Also her floor could be useful for the team. I think she is proving once again she's extremely reliable in a Worlds situation.

Do we need to worry?
My answer is... don't worry.
They will get their work done and do at least discreetly in Glasgow.
It's known that Russian gymnasts always look a bit off at their national competitions, so I don't feel like this year is different from the others. Remind that last year it looked like they were falling apart but then they still managed to grab the team bronze medal. It's true, all the individual medals came from Aliya (and from Spiridonova on bars) but this year they have a good specialist on every event. Maria Paseka could realistically fight for a vault medal, and Daria Spiridonova has one of the best bar routines in the world. Beam is always unpredictable but they have some good specialists too. Floor is not their best event, but Ksenia Afanasyeva could recover during this month.
Maybe Glasgow won't be their best Worlds, but they have some pretty good gymnasts and I'm sure they will be ready for Rio. I'm not saying they will slay at competition, but I don't see a catastrophe coming.
Russia is Russia, and they will do everything they need to land with high ambitions at the Olympics. That's what matters.
It's still too early to assume they are in a disastrous situation. Let's wait a little more and see what happens in October.
